Unsung Hero, the Story of Kai Forbath

158030264

There was a graphic on CBS when watching the game this week that listed all of the Redskins starting quarterbacks since the days of Mark Rypien. The TV networks always have something like this up their sleeve, usually coaches, and it gets pretty tiring to see as a Redskins fan. Of course now we can reasonably hope that that list of 20+ quarterbacks stays put for a bit. But in looking at that graphic it made me think... how many freaking kickers have we had?

By my count, the Skins have had 23 kickers since the days of Chip Lohmiller. It's a checkered list with names like Suisham, Akers, Conway, Hall, and plenty of other names nearly lost forever. The Redskins quest for a kicker and the revolving door that it has been for almost twenty years is almost as ridiculous a search for the Redskins franchise quarterback. But the questions is... is that search over on both fronts?

We've been teased before with the likes of Graham Gano, but is the Redskins current 25 year old kicker the real deal? Kai Forbath for all intents and purposes is a rookie in the NFL. Yes, he did have a stint with the Cowboys and the Buccaneers, but there was never a regular season attempt. People do not pay that much attention to kickers but the NFL's current rookie crop may rival the recent quarterbacks to join the league. There is a triumvirate of kickers led by Forbath, the Ravens' Justin Tucker, and "Legatron" Greg Zuerlein who have been unflappable this year.

Be honest, did you flinch a little when Forbath hit the field on Sunday to make a couple of big field goals? Did you get that throw up feeling deep down? Did you not want to watch? I'll admit it, I felt all of those feelings; but do we need to? To say the former UCLA Bruin has been phenomenal this year would be a gross understatement. Of course its easy to glance and see that Forbath is 14 for 14 on the year, but when you dig a little deeper and see that he's 9 for 9 beyond 40 yards things really start to stand out.

Sure there are deficiencies with Forbath as the kickoff guy, but that can be easily fixed in the offseason. A "high" priority this Spring has to be a new punter (who isn't ancient) that can hold, punt, and kickoff. I'd caution making this move at the present time due to the whole kicker-holder-snapper exchange (yes, that is a technical term).

Many thought the Redskins would give Neil Rackers a call, or sign Mare or Brown. But be happy that Mike Shanahan, Danny Smith, whoever went with Forbath. Surely Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris' names pop up at first thought of a team MVP, but Forbath's name cannot be far behind. The Redskins would not be in the midst of a four game winning streak without Kobra Kai.

The Largest Iceberg Breakup Ever Caught on Camera

The Largest Iceberg Breakup Ever Caught on Camera calving

We’ve written about photographer James Balog’s documentary film Chasing Ice a couple of times in the past. His team spent years shooting time-lapse photographs of glaciers around the world using solar-powered Nikon DSLRs, which allows changes over a long period of time to be seen in just seconds or minutes.

One particular scene in the movie shows an epic event: the largest iceberg breakup ever caught on camera.

Here’s what the team says about the 75-minute event, which is known as ice calving:

Pieces of ice were shooting up out of the ocean 600ft and then falling. The only way that you can really try to put it into scale with human reference is if you imagine Manhattan, and all of a sudden all of those buildings just start to rumble and quake and peel off and fall over and roll around. This whole massive city just breaking part in front of your eyes.

Here’s the 4-minute clip, courtesy of The Guardian:

Since the video only shows landscapes of ice and water, it’s difficult to get a sense of the scale being depicted. The text helps give a slightly better sense, though… those moving chunks of ice are absolutely massive.

How to Make Vanilla Extract at Home

Vanilla extract takes only time – and almost no effort – to make at home. Experiment with different types of vanilla to find your favorite.

How to Make Vanilla Extract

The month of December, also known as Cookie Month, generally requires a lot of vanilla. It is that one month when ingredients for cookies seem to take over shopping lists and whole grocery store aisles. Even my local organic grocer, which is rather tiny, now has an entire section just with ingredients for cookies.

Not every cookie recipe calls for vanilla, but having heaps on stock is always a good idea. Vanilla extract is much harder to come by here in Europe. Vanilla beans are certainly the real deal and although I do love cooking with them, sometimes I’m just too lazy. Sometimes I just prefer vanilla extract. Luckily it is quite easy to make at home. All you need is alcohol of some kind (I used vodka), vanilla beans and two months time.

I find it incredibly satisfying to make something from scratch. I imagine the feeling that I get from whisking egg yolks and oil to become mayonnaise or pulsing almonds into flour is comparable to a child who likes to take telephones apart and then put them back together. It is a eureka kind of moment, like you have figured out how the world works and you know how to put it back together should it ever fall apart.

That said, learning how to make things from scratch can be a real tease. You finally have a living and breathing sourdough starter yet you need a few more days before you can bake with it. You have pulses soaked in water but it will be a day or two more before they sprout. And you have homemade vanilla extract in your cupboard that is getting darker and more beautiful each day, but it will be two months before you can use it.

I’m pretty sure that if you take a telephone apart you can put it back together instantly. I’m afraid to say that making things from scratch is not the same. However, demystifying foods such as sourdough or sprouts or vanilla extract is certainly worth the wait. Also, vanilla extract makes an excellent gift. If you get to it now people can use it in February and by then they’ll probably be ready to bake cookies again.

Vanilla extract takes only time – and almost no effort – to make at home. You can experiment with different types of vanilla, everything from South Indian to Hawaiian. This yields 1 cup of vanilla extract.
Ingredients
  • 1 cup alcohol (I used vodka)
  • 3 vanilla beans
Instructions
  1. Use a sharp knife to split the vanilla beans in half; however, leave about an inch at the top of each bean connected.
  2. Put the vanilla beans in a glass jar. Old maple syrup jars are excellent for this. Pour in the alcohol so that it covers the beans completely. Tightly cover the jar with a lid. Give the jar a good shake and then store it in a dark and cool place. Give it a good shake every week or so.
  3. Age for at least two months before using. After two months you can pour the extract into smaller bottles if you wish.
  4. This will last for years (that is if you don’t use it all for baking cookies).

Forget Nukes, Maybe We Can Block Asteroids with Paintballs

Paintball_thumb

Remember that time Bruce Willis and the American rock ‘n roll band Aerosmith saved planet Earth by blowing up an asteroid in an act of ultimate human sacrifice? Turns out they were pretty stupid and, instead of nukes, they could have just launched a bunch of white paint at the thing. This new civilization-saving plot comes courtesy of an MIT grad student, Sung Wook Paek, winner of the UN’s 2012 Move an Asteroid Technical Paper Competition. Which you probably had no idea was underway, no matter that it will no doubt one day save your life and/or the lives of future blue-collar deep-core drillers.

The idea takes advantage of solar radiation pressure, which is the principle that any electromagnetic radiation exerts a force on whatever surface it comes across. This is how a solar sail works: photons from the Sun (or wherever) traveling with momentum and energy hit the sail and transfer that momentum to the sail, like wind. The more reflective the surface/sail is, the more force is exerted. So the idea is to make the asteroid more reflective. If you turn it bright white, the force of the paint being launched at the asteroid plus the solar radiation pressure should blow the thing off course. We’re saved!

Paek used the asteroid Apophis as his test case. That rock weights a hefty 27-gigatons and will be coming pretty close to Earth two times in the very near future, in 2029 and 2036. The plan will take about five tons of paint, delivered in two rounds, one for the front and one from the back. Once painted, the deflection will take about 20 years. Which is, yeah, a really long time. Paek also suggests the method for delivering substances into the path of the asteroid, slowing it down, or maybe just for painting the thing for the purpose of better tracking.

Anyhow, let’s close by noting the irony of saving a planet from destruction-by-asteroid with a nuclear weapon when that planet has, as of 2011, 5,027 nuclear weapons aiming right back at Earth.

Jason Pierre-Paul: "Don't Bring It To my Side" then Gets Leveled

20120829_ajl_ar4_040

Leading up to the Redskins game, the Jason Pierre-Paul had this to say about Robert Griffin III via NY Daily News reported Jason Pierre-Paul wasn't too impressed with RGIII: :

Jason Pierre-Paul has seen the speed of Robert Griffin III and he knows the Redskins quarterback will try to run on the Giants' defense on Sunday. But JPP has a warning for RGIII.

"Don't bring it to my side," Pierre-Paul said. "Go the other way."

Not that Pierre-Paul expects Griffin to have much success going in the other direction either, now that the Giants' defense has rediscovered its confidence after its dominant performance in San Francisco last Sunday

Oh, really. Let's see how JPP did on this first quarter scramble by Robert Griffin III. Meet Trent Williams:

Redskins4_medium

Here we have JPP in the 2nd quarter...

Redskins3_medium

And here's video of RGIII faking JPP out from the other side for a 25+ yard scramble...

Oh...and on that huge 4th and 10 play with 2 minutes left in the game....RGIII jukes JPP out of his jock and Trent Williams lays a nice hit on Osi.

quarter after a long Alfred Morris run...

Redskins3_medium

Then of course, towards the end of the game, JPP got the sack and went Gangham Style on us. But, I have a feeling JPP won't be as confident talking ish before the next game.

I don't even see JPP on this play, but man...what amazing blocking and even better touch on this throw:
